Ado Jorio is the Deputy General Director of INL. He works on the research and development of scientific instrumentation in optics for studying nanostructures, with applications in new materials and biomedicine. He earned a doctoral degree in physics from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG, Brazil), where he worked on phase transitions in incommensurate systems. Following this, he undertook a postdoctoral period at MIT, USA, focusing on the optical properties of nanomaterials, with a particular emphasis on Raman spectroscopy and the optical properties of carbon nanomaterials. He was visiting Prof. at ETH, Zurich and Freie Universität, Berlin.
At UFMG, he was Dean of Research, Director of the Technology Transfer Office, Head of the Physics Department and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Physics and of the Graduate Program in Technological Innovation. He also held the positions of Coordinator of Strategic Studies and Information at the Brazilian National Metrology Institute – Inmetro and vice-President of the Brazilian Physical Society.
He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the National Order of Scientific Merit (Commander class) and the World Academy of Sciences.
