Carmen Rubio Verdú, Ph.D. is a Group Leader at ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences, where she heads the STM on 2D Quantum Materials research group, focusing on correlated phases in two-dimensional and moiré materials using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Dr. Rubio-Verdú pursued her undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the University of Alicante before transitioning her focus toward condensed matter physics during her doctoral research. She obtained her Ph.D. in Experimental Physics at CIC nanoGUNE in San Sebastián, where she worked on atomic-scale phenomena in low-dimensional systems.  Following her Ph.D., she was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellowship, first at Columbia University in the United States working with Prof. A. Pasupathy on scanning tunneling microscopy studies of quantum materials, and subsequently at Freie Universität Berlin collaborating with Prof. K. Franke. In 2023 she established her independent group at ICFO and has since been funded by an ERC Starting Grant to advance fundamental understanding of emergent electronic phases in twisted and layered two-dimensional materials.
